The luxurious Eliseyev Emporium
The superb Art Nouveau building constructed in the beginning of the 20th century by the Elisseeff Brothers houses the most famous food hall in Saint Petersburg. The luxurious Eliseyev Emporium is located in the beautiful Nevsky Prospekt street, right in the city center.
The front window is a pleasant surprise. I was enchanted by the magic of the moving dolls on display. The colorful dolls are fairy tale characters from the “The Nutcracker.” They were specially created for the store by the artist Mikhail Shemyakin.
The interior is decorated with perfection in the Art Nouveau style. After the restoration, the Eliseyev Emporium preserved the original 7 departments that include uncountable display counters of delicacies. The largest one is dedicated to home-made patisserie including the classic macaroons.
They have a huge variety of products not only from Russia but from all Europe. You can find dark chocolate from Italy, champagne from France, oriental sweets from Turkey, roasted nuts, candied fruit, nougat, jams of rare fruits and berries, many varieties of olive oils, cheese, charcuterie, smoked salmon and, of course, caviar and vodka from Russia.
Be careful not to get carried away, everything is pretty high-priced there. I was immediately attracted by the colorful Macaroons but when I saw that they cost a little fortune I got scared away and I just ordered some coffee.
Although this is a popular tourist attraction in Saint Petersburg the service is not one of its strengths. The employees don’t seem to like having people walking around taking photos all over the place. Upon entrance, we were instructed by our guide to buy something before taking any pictures to avoid the staff’s angry looks.
