The Peterhof Palace in Saint Petersburg

The Peterhof Palace, often referred as the “Russian Versailles“, is one of Saint Petersburg’s most famous and popular visitor attractions. It was constructed on the orders of Peter the Great under Western European influence. The complex consists of the Grand Palace and the Grand Cascade in front of it, the lower gardens and the upper gardens. In the gardens, there are many beautiful fountains and cascades, as well as several small palaces and outbuildings.

The Grand Palace looks quite big from the outside but in fact is quite small. Only a small portion of the palace is allowed to the visitors to see which for me was very disappointing. Another annoying feature is that for everything you visit there’s a separate ticket to buy. There’s a ticket for the gardens, another for the Grand Palace and so on.

The Peterhof Palace is painfully crowded in summer months when people from all over Russia come to visit it. It’s easily accessible by boat. Visitors can take the hydrofoil between Peterhof and Saint Petersburg on the Neva River behind the Hermitage museum. It is fast but also expensive. The travel time is about 45 minutes and the round ticket costs 1100 RUB per person. It departs every 30 minutes. You can buy the tickets online at http://www.peterhof-express.com/.
